The coverage on albums this year was crap. I read many lists asserting that this year, 2017, was the year of hip-hop and all the classic hip-hop records have been released this year and nothing else competes. This is a load of crap. There were plenty of great albums from all genres released this year, just like every year, hip-hop didn't suddenly get good this year. It remained the same quality it has had every year, all records in the genre are a hit or miss. I would argue that most of the so called best hip-hop records released this year are boring, but that's just me.
First, I want to take a damn moment to talk about DAMN. DAMN is not as damn good as everyone makes it out to be. I don't have a damn clue why DAMN is at the top of every damn album of the year list. All my damn friends call DAMN the best album of the year, and that is a damn shame. There ain't a damn good thing about this album. It's just like every damn other thing he made. I don't care about your damn opinion, or your friends damn opinion, or the damn opinion of some bald guy in a flannel. You're damn opinion is crap and only my damn opinion is the correct opinion, god damn it.
This year was infact a year full of bands I usually hate making albums I like and bands I like making music I don't like, but both cases made music that was very different from their original line of work, not already known musicians making their opus. This was a good year for music, for me. This list might not make sense, or be bad, or be the dredded plebian but it's still my list.
Genre: Noise Rock
Zach Hill is a good musician. That is all I have to say about that. I wish hella was still a thing.
Genre: Heavy Psychedelic
One of the only two good psych bands ever. I didn't finish but what I heard was pretty good.
The other only good psych band. Infact, this is the only good psych band that has ever released a masterpiece. This one is just as good, if not better, than their debut album, Long Distance Trip. This album, and the aforementioned one, are only good because you can listen to them sober, like I did, and still like what you heard.
It's lyrically good too.
Genre: Post Rock
This one is a bit of a stretch because while I usually enjoy the work of Godspeed You! Black Emperor because of their concept albums, the concept for this album sucks. GY!BE make concept albums about how lonely civilization can be, in juxtaposition to how lively they, cities and the band itself, are. The concept for this album is slightly different:
The concept for this album is as follows
this, this long-playing record, a thing we made in the midst of communal mess, raising dogs and children. eyes up and filled with dreadful joy – we aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward. we recorded it all in a burning motorboat.
1. UNDOING A LUCIFERIAN TOWERS – look at that fucking skyline! big lazy money writ in dull marble obelisks! imagine all those buildings much later on, hollowed out and stripped bare of wires and glass, listen- the wind is whistling through all 3,000 of its burning window-holes!
2. BOSSES HANG – labor, alienated from the wealth it creates, so that holy cow, most of us live precariously! kicking at it, but barely hanging on! also – the proud illuminations of our shortened lives! also – more of us than them! also – what we need now is shovels, wells, and barricades!
3. FAM / FAMINE – how they kill us = absentee landlord, burning high-rise. the loud panics of child-policemen and their exploding trigger-hands. with the dull edge of an arbitrary meritocracy. neglect, cancer maps, drone strike, famine. the forest is burning and soon they’ll hunt us like wolves.
4. ANTHEM FOR NO STATE – kanada, emptied of its minerals and dirty oil. emptied of its trees and water. a crippled thing, drowning in a puddle, covered in ants. the ocean doesn’t give a shit because it knows it’s dying too.
What the hell does any of this mean? You want no state but you also want someone to blame for it? That's stupid.
But I thought the music itself was phenominal.
Genre: Post Metal
This is also not their best work, but still a good album.
One oh Trix point never didn't release anything this year, so this will have to do for the good electronic record quota.
Genre: Post Rock
This one probably should be one, but it's not, and if you don't like it you can leave your complaint at my youtube channel, except you can't because it got deleted before I could upload a video for the site so hahahaah (true story). Every Country's Sun is completely different from anything else made by Mogwai. It's much poppier than thier other work, which would normally be a downside, but the asthetic it brings to the album works.
Genre: Math Rock
Is this really my third favorite album from this year? Probably not. But it's called three so I couldn't refuse.
Genre: Gothic Rock
This one is called
Third Album in Russian. Making this or 3 number three was a toss up. I don't understand any Russian at all, but this album is still high quality. It has some electronic elements, which was something I was not expecting.
Genre: Math Rock
If you told me a year ago that my favorite album of 2017 was a Tera Melos album, I would have laughed at you. But it's true. I was plesantly supprised by Tera Melos this year. It has that what is going on math rock asthetic that I enjoy greatly. Their other albums bore me, I don't know what was different this time.
That is my top ten best albums. I hope I can listen to top ten better albums next year.Main Page
